About the role

The Custodial Census Specialist manages the daily resident census for assigned skilled nursing facilities, ensuring accurate records for admissions, discharges, transfers, and payer information. This role supports reimbursement, compliance, and continuity of care by verifying insurance eligibility and maintaining authorization documentation.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain up‑to‑date resident census data across all assigned facilities.
• Track daily admissions, discharges, transfers, and payer changes, updating internal systems promptly.
• Verify insurance eligibility and benefits to ensure correct payer assignment.
• Review and record authorization requirements for custodial residents.
• Collaborate with facilities, managed‑care organizations, and internal teams to resolve census discrepancies and eligibility issues.
• Respond to payer notifications and ensure timely upload of discharge documentation.
• Identify and flag potential reimbursement risks or documentation gaps for leadership.
• Prioritize work queues to meet departmental turnaround expectations.
• Ensure compliance with payer guidelines, HIPAA, and company policies.
