Senior Backend Engineer – Java, Go, GCP/AWS

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and own production‑grade backend services as part of a major platform modernization effort for a global news organization. The role focuses on replacing third‑party CMS capabilities with independent services, starting with authentication and identity, and supports headless front‑ends and other digital products.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and operate cloud‑native backend services on AWS and Google Cloud, replacing existing CMS functionality.
• Lead the creation of a new authentication and identity service, handling secure sessions and token management.
• Define and implement APIs (REST, GraphQL, gRPC) for headless front‑ends and other products.
• Plan and execute migrations from legacy or vendor platforms with minimal disruption.
• Ensure reliability, scalability, performance and observability through logging, metrics and distributed tracing.
• Mentor a mid‑level engineer and contribute to engineering standards.

Required profile

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with senior‑level ownership of production services.
• Strong professional experience in Java and Go.
• Hands‑on experience with AWS and Google Cloud managed services.
• Proven ability to design and deliver scalable, maintainable services autonomously.
• Fluent English communication and collaboration with senior technical stakeholders.
